Ludovic Bernhardt his work focuses on the possibility of making images on the basis of pictures floating in the web. Pictures are like empty ghosts, without life. The internet pictures are radically lost inside the world-wide web : they are orphaned without presence. The paintings made on the basis of those images are particularly haunted by those ghosts. Riots, bomb attacks, nation maps, art icons – taken out of the web – are used like a political eruption.
The zero degree of image - this bad and very low quality characteristic of the multiplicity of the web world wide – is questioned. Without subjectivity or personal intervention, with a methodical and neutral process, the artist becomes a kind of copyist.
Furthermore, in a wider sense, Ludovic Bernhardt’s art work is concerned about the notion of power and constraint: visual and hierarchic constraint (military signals, medals, heraldic…), technological constraint (weapons, rockets), space constraint (grids, ornaments, repetition of motives). As Giorgio Agamben says, the contemporary world is like a labyrinth, which exhibits its own rule and its sign system in contrast with life. Ludovic Bernhardt’s work questions this bio-politics problem.
